I'm not totally convinced on this one. I get they wanted to make talents a lot more optional and fun, (as mentioned all the time, like 'body and soul'! and 'chakra'!" but this just seems like a mix of lazy design and cutting down toooo much. From the sounds of it they don't have many ideas for this 'flavour' talent style, so they're limiting the amount they'll have to make. They're also limiting the choices you make altogether though....which regardless of masteries will probably give some jippy numbers when it comes to figures. You can't tell me a tree full of - cast time + this damage + damage with this spell + more damage with this spell when this DoT is present etc isnt going to be affected by losing....pretty much all of them, in favour of "mastery" - increased by a stat that won't be available on gear until you're nearly/at level 85.
Not only that, the specialisation before you've spent 31 points in a tree sounds like havoc for levelling. For example, if i'm levelling a mage as frost currently, and i want to go via aoe grinding, i don't want to go all the way to the bottom of the tree - i want the relevant talents, then to go into arcane to pick up some nice boosters to my damage, mana regen etc. That won't be possible.
I completely understand blizzards standpoint that talent specs shouldn't be cookie cutter = set in stone, I also understand how adding "flavour" talents to these builds will be awesome, and also how mastery will help in cutting down on these currently mandatory talents that are just bland....but to completely rebuild from scratch a formula which has worked for the game and 2 expansions later seems a bit heavy handed.
I for one am scared about their plans for the Demonology tree (yeah i know, warlock, shut up). Most of these talents are actually fun talents or mechanics....molten core is a nice proc based damage increase, you've got some handy buffs based on what pet you're using (which admittedly stays on felguard if you're demo specced most of the time, but for example if i were to tank a caster i could get out my felhunter which reduces the magic damage i take by 10% - thats a nice talent). Decimation is awesome, and kinda mandatory for keeping the demo rotation interesting and competitive, DP is great for raid utility and even stuff like demonic knowledge and master conjuror are just great perks of the tree that i really wouldn't want to lose. I can imagine any class could say the same about at least one tree.
We'll have to see how it goes i guess. Give beta key!

Will it be a minor difference maker though, like at level 68 when you get your first piece with a whole 23 haste on? In fact thats another point - scaling mastery (as a stat converting to the individual masteries of different trees) sounds like it'll be hell!

The current implementation seems rather drastic. One item easily boosts the mastery bonus by 1% or 2%. But that's with the "old" mastery of course.

Should anyone consider playing a night elf alt, you should maybe wait for Cataclysm, as Darkshore will be much more streamlined and much more fun obviously.
